President Trump has posted this picture on social media of himself as Christ healing the sick. I’ve long given up saying how hard it is to think of any previous US president who behaved like Donald Trump, but comparing himself to Jesus puts him on another level altogether.

Axios: No deal! Trump announces blockade

No deal! Trump announces blockade

Several hours after peace talks in Pakistan ended in failure, President Trump announced the U.S. is imposing a naval blockade on Iran, Axios’ Barak Ravid reports.

Why it matters: The move would prevent Iran from exporting its oil as long as other countries are prevented from doing so.

Trump said on Truth Social that the U.S. Navy will immediately “begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz,” where traffic has fallen to a trickle.

Saying this weekend’s Iran-U.S. peace talks in Pakistan failed over the nuclear issue, Trump added: “We will also begin destroying the mines the Iranians laid in the Straits. Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!”

The backdrop: The U.S. and Iran failed to reach an agreement after 21 hours of face-to-face talks — leaving the two-week ceasefire in limbo, with the possibility of renewed and escalating warfare.

Vice President Vance flew out of Islamabad after saying the parties had “substantive discussions” but couldn’t bridge the gaps.☢️

According to a source briefed on the talks, some of the disagreements had to do with Iran’s demand to control the Strait of Hormuz and refusal to give up its enriched uranium stockpile.

Vance said: “This is bad news for Iran much more than this is bad news for the U.S. … We have made very clear what our red lines are … and they have chosen not to accept our terms.”

He said the U.S. wants a long-term “affirmative commitment” from the Iranians not to seek a nuclear weapon or tools to produce one quickly: “We haven’t seen that yet. We hope that we will.”Vice President Vance, Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff during a news conference early today in Islamabad, Pakistan. Photo: Jacquelyn Martin/AP

The other side: Several Iranian media outlets said after Vance’s press conference that the talks failed because the U.S. side wasn’t realistic and made “excessive demands.

The bottom line: No one expected a final agreement yesterday. But the U.S. side hoped for enough momentum to keep negotiating, even if that meant extending the ceasefire. Vance’s brief remarks conveyed little such optimism, though he didn’t say the U.S. is walking away.Share this story.

Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff, amped up criticism of the war in Iran at a Vatican prayer service on Saturday, condemning the “delusion of omnipotence” behind the conflict as he urged leaders to “sit at the table of dialogue and mediation.”

Pope Leo XIV Leads 'Prayer Vigil For Peace' At The Vatican

Key Facts

The pope took aim at the leaders behind the war in Iran during his Saturday prayer, declaring, “Enough of the idolatry of self and money! Enough of the display of power! Enough of war!”

Leo said the “delusion of omnipotence” fueling the war is “becoming increasingly unpredictable and aggressive,” saying families are becoming “destabilized.”

Leo appealed to “leaders of nations”—though he did not name President Donald Trump or others involved in the conflict—saying, “To them we cry out: Stop! It is time for peace,” urging them to “sit at the table of dialogue and mediation.”

Leo delivered his remarks as American and Iranian delegations engage in face-to-face talks with Pakistani mediators, a high-stakes meeting amid a fragile two-week ceasefire agreement.

“Even the holy name of God, the God of life, is being dragged into discourses of death,” Leo said, doubling down on remarks he previously made condemning religious justifications for the war.

After his speech, Leo doubled down on his remarks in a post on X, warning “death enslaves those who have turned their backs on the living God, turning themselves and their own power into a mute, blind and deaf idol.”

What Else Has Leo Said About The War?

Leo has emerged as a fierce critic of the war, saying on Friday, “God does not bless any conflict. Anyone who is a disciple of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs.” Early in the conflict, Leo warned a “spiral of violence” could risk becoming “an unbridgeable chasm,” saying peace can be reached “only through reasonable, sincere, and responsible dialogue.” On Tuesday, Leo condemned Trump’s threat that a “whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” calling the remark “truly unacceptable.” “There are certainly issues here of international law, but even more than that, it is a moral question,” Leo said.

How Are Tensions Rising Between The Pope And Washington?

Leo’s remarks come amid mounting tension between the United States and the Vatican. Earlier this week, the Pentagon denied reports a meeting between Defense Department leaders and the Vatican’s U.S. envoy was contentious, though it confirmed the meeting happened in January. An unnamed Pentagon spokesperson said the Department of Defense has “nothing but the highest regard and welcome continued dialogue with the Holy See,” saying the talks were “respectful.” The spokesperson criticized a report in the Free Press as “highly exaggerated,” after the report claimed the meeting was tense and that Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby warned the U.S. has the military power “to do whatever it wants in the world,” saying the Catholic Church “better take its side.” In the meeting, which involved Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the Free Press claimed Colby raised a threat of the Avignon Papacy, referring to a period in the 14th century in which France ousted the pope and exerted control over the church. The Free Press claimed Pentagon officials were angered by a speech Leo made in January, in which he said “a diplomacy that promotes dialogue and seeks consensus among all parties is being replaced by a diplomacy based on force.”

David Axelrod, formerly a senior adviser to President Barack Obama, met with Leo on Thursday, according to the Vatican’s daily bulletin. Details of the meeting are unclear, but it comes amid rumors Obama may be arranging a meeting with the pope. Christopher Hale, a political strategist who runs a “Letters from Leo” newsletter about the pope, reported in March Obama was in early talks to meet with Leo. Such a meeting may mean Obama could meet Leo before Trump, who has not yet met with the first American pontiff.

Breaking Defense: UK accuses Russia of covert submarine operation threatening undersea cables. Comment is the Island of Ireland, a weak link, exposed

UK accuses Russia of covert submarine operation threatening undersea cables

Together with allies, the UK tracked “every mile” of the deployment involving an Akula-class and a pair of Main Directorate for Deep Sea Research (GUGI) surveillance submarines, according to British defense secretary John Healey.

BELFAST — The UK said today it had uncovered what it described as a secret Russian attack submarine and underwater spy vessel mission in and around British waters that lasted over a month and threatened undersea cables.

British Defense Secretary John Healey said there was “no evidence” that the cables or underwater pipelines had been damaged, but said, “I’m making this statement to call out this Russian activity, and to President [Vladimir] Putin, I say ‘we see you.’”

Healey told media during a press conference in London that over the last few weeks and together with allies, the UK tracked “every mile” of the deployment involving an Akula-class and a pair of Main Directorate for Deep Sea Research (GUGI) surveillance submarines.

He said that the Akula was “likely” used as a decoy to distract from the GUGI-led activities, as the sister vessels “spent time over critical infrastructure relevant to us and our allies in the North Atlantic.”

Healey said there would be “serious consequences” if “any attempt” is made by Moscow to destroy subsea infrastructure, though he refused to reveal any options that the UK and allies could consider, on grounds that it would “make the Russians wiser.”

The Russian embassy in London reportedly denied Healey’s claims.

He noted that at a national level alone, the effort to track the foreign subs involved a Royal Air Force P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft logging over 450 flight hours. In support, the Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigate HMS St Albans, covered “several thousand” nautical miles. Both services also deployed sonobuoys to monitor the Russian subs.

A related UK statement outlined that the Akula-class vessel was also tracked by Merlin naval helicopters and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s Tidespring – a logistics support ship.

The coordinated response to counter the submarine incursion included support from Norway. Norway’s defense minister, Tore O. Sandvik, said in a separate statement that the Nordic nation’s contribution involved a P-8 and a frigate.

The UK MoD also released a satellite image on X of Russia’s naval base Olenya in the High North, pictured with what the UK identified as a Yantar spy ship and the two GUGI submarines prior to leaving port for British waters.

As stated by Healey, the subs are specifically designed to “survey underwater infrastructure during peacetime and sabotage it in conflict.”

In comments widely shared with media, John Hardie, Russia program deputy director at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington DC-based national security think tank, said GUGI vessels have “long engaged in suspicious activity near undersea cables. Russia can use these vessels to place wiretaps or collect intelligence to support contingency planning to disrupt NATO communications in the event of war.”

In addition to the three-vessel submarine episode, the UK also says that it has undertaken a further “ten days of intensive monitoring operations of Russian warships and a submarine which entered UK waters in the English Channel and North Sea,” per the government statement.

In response, Royal Navy surface ships and wildcat helicopters monitored the journeys of a Russian destroyer, frigate, landing ship, and Kilo-class submarine.

The Russian deployments come at a time when analysts say UK naval resources are overly stretched, highlighted in particular by the recent reported struggle to deploy one of six Type 45 destroyers to the eastern Mediterranean, in response to regional defensive operations spawned from the war in Iran.

Since then, Germany’s frigate Sachsen has been forced to step in and fill a gap left by the British destroyer, which was initially planned to be the flagship of a NATO mission in the North Atlantic.

Healey acknowledged that the Royal Navy has been “hallowed out” over the last 14 years, as he accused previous Conservative governments of cutting warships, mine hunters and delaying the renewal of Britain’s nuclear deterrent.

“We can’t turn that [legacy] round as a relatively new government overnight, but we’re spending £300 million [$403 million] more on ship building,” he stressed.

Healey did not provide any new information about when the long-delayed UK defense investment plan will be published. The document, originally planned for release in the fall of 2025, is set to spell out MoD acquisition commitments and cuts over the next decade.

“We will” publish the plan “as soon as possible,” he explained, consistent with messaging from the MoD and other ministers dating back over several weeks.
