Quotations: Mental illness: through the years I have believed that one of the most effective ways of coping with mood disorder is to strive through bibliotherapy (reading), Dr Google, the mentors we choose, social media and all that is available via youtube. One man I was drawn to and followed his quotes, at a time when anxiety consumed my being initiating depressions so intrusive, only shattered by ECT at that time, 2 decades ago now. Only today, I have re-activated his name “William James” and checked out his quotations and then gone further. I am over-awed. Evidently those quotations which because of amnesia due to TBI I cannot hold in my damaged brain, are recorded on the computer. This led to many quotations being typed out over the decades as one can see from my WordPress blog. A random choice looking for some hope and youtube has opened up a doorway of consolation and curiosity. This man, William James, is a man I would ask anyone with mental health issues to become aware of and engage with, despite the fact he was born in 1842. It is my belief that people, especially children, adolescents must be watched over because of the impact of Covid-19, the fixation with ecocide and now War in Europe with a threat of the use of nuclear weapons. I encourage a journey especially for those neglected by our cinderella psychiatric/psychology services, with half the budget allocated by other countries. This becomes your personal journey. A good place to start is to listen to this gentle voice man tell the story of William James life.

“Knowledge is no load”. We read of catastrophic numbers of young people in Ireland facing mental illness. Being diagnosed bipolar with anxiety manisfesting in many ways including social anxiety disorder accentuated by traumatic brain injury, I recommend a path forward. Attending lectures 20 years ago at St. Patrick’s Foundation; lectures at Trinity College Dublin; counselling CBT, I have found bibliotherapy beneficial but now we have access to people like Dr Jordan Peterson, who is controversial, but his acumen speaks volumes.

10,056,870 views Sep 28, 2022 Clinical psychologist and public intellectual Dr Jordan Peterson has sat down with Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan for an insightful and emotional interview discussing his work, free speech and the world today.

Traumatic brain injury; stroke, poor memory, other medical conditions affecting the brain, this is a little gem for people in rehabilitation, recovery to benchmark their engagement with lifelong learning. Speech therapy after a TBI introduced techniques to assist memory. I used to watch TV and write notes, especially politics, notes in my day journal; it helped. 30 years on I have too many notebooks but the brain must be kept active; it is too easy to lean into dementia post TBI and we all have choices to make.

Dr Ramani. “Don’t ARGUE or Fight with a narcissist”. Examine soul distancing – this is “grey rock”. Do not share vulnerabilities, ambitions, secrets. Avoid those who mock you, manipulate you, gaslight you, rage at you, exploit you. Remember narcissists are looking to engage with you so that they can feed off you for their ego but at your expense. Narcissism. Tools to protect yourself from it. You cannot change the behaviour of a narcissist. Narcissism is not a diagnosis. It is a personality style just like agreeable (counter weight to narcissism). But Diagnosis is Narcissism Personality Disorder. Style. A person who has a lack of empathy; low empathy, very entitled, arrogant, ego centric, chronically in need of validation and admiration, they need to be in control at all times, they are thin skinned, pretentious, superficial, grandiose. But what you must understand is core to these characteristics is deep insecurity. (Dr. Ramani, world leading expert). Narcissists are not born, they are made. Temperament is the genetic part of a baby. Crier, demanding, look at me, always doing things for attention, reprimand by parents, teachers means they lack invalidation and this can lead to narcissism in the person. Then there is the over indulged child where the child is told they are more special than another child is where the damage starts. Narcissists are made in childhood. They are in the offensive and defensive at the same time. Their empathy is very superficial. Beware of RAGE and GASLIGHTING. Narcissistic parent … “this is not TikTok” … hard learning process. Examples: the golden child as opposed to the scapegoat; the helper; the fixer; the truth teller. ie excommunication from the family; the brainwashed child. Narcissists see you as object. Everyone is a function as far as the narcissist is concerned; they are not interested in you. Never call out a narcissist. Advice: “Stop taking the bait”. “You can’t change the weather in Chicago”….you cannot change the narcissist. Don’t be a narcissist’s punching bag. Narcissists need supply…reactions…endorsements
