Judge Goes Ballistic When Man Shows AI-Generated Video in Court

And as The Register reports, the judge was extremely unimpressed by the stunt, and proceeded to chew him out.

Plaintiff Jerome Dewald appeared before the New York State’s Supreme Court on March 26 as part of an employment dispute with an insurance company called MassMutual Metro.

“Now may it please the court, I come here today a humble pro se before a panel of five distinguished justices,” said a well-groomed, sweater-wearing AI avatar — who looks roughly three decades younger than Dewald — in the video.

But the video was interrupted almost immediately.

“Is this … hold on? Is that counsel for the case?” a confused associate justice Sallie Manzanet-Daniels asked.

“That? I generated that,” a proud and in-the-flesh Dewald responded from inside the courtroom.

“That is not a real person,” he clarified sheepishly.

“It would have been nice to know that when you made your application,” Manzanet-Daniels responded angrily. “You did not tell me that, sir.”

The use of AI in the courtroom has already proven highly controversial, with several lawyers being raked over the coals for using ChatGPT and not realizing it had come up with entirely fictional case law.

In the case of Dewald, the judge tore him out for claiming that a medical condition — a bout with throat cancer around 25 years ago — had left him incapable of addressing the court directly since he already had “verbal conversations with our staff for over 30 minutes.”

“I don’t appreciate being misled,” she added. “So either you are suffering from an ailment that prevents you from being able to articulate or you don’t. You are not going to use this courtroom as a launch for your business, sir.”

Dewald has a startup, called Pro Se Pro, which is designed to help litigants represent themselves by creating realistic video avatars.

As Dewald later told the Register in an interview, the court had given him permission for a presentation. But they “were unprepared to see an artificially generated image,” he said.

“Extended speaking is problematic for me,” he explained.

Dewald was originally going to use a separate service called Tavus to create an AI avatar of his face, but ran out of time. (It’s unclear whether Tavus and Pro Se Pro are in any way related).

Instead, he “just used one of their stock replicas, that big, beautiful hunk of a guy that they call Jim.”

Dewald also acknowledged that the use of AI may end up hurting your case “because there’s such a negative view of hallucinations and AI,” he told the Register.

The Deep View: NATO acquires Palantir’s AI-for-war platform

NATO acquires Palantir’s AI-for-war platform

NATO, the Europe-North American military alliance, said Monday that it has acquired Palantir’s Maven Smart System (MSS) for warfighting.
The details: The platform purportedly brings together a wide range of data sources and a number of AI-related applications, including large language models (LLMs), generative AI and machine learning. It will be used, according to a statement, to enhance “intelligence fusion and targeting, battlespace awareness and planning, and accelerated decision-making.”
NATO said in a statement that the acquisition was “one of the most expeditious” in NATO’s history, spanning just six months from early outlines to final acquisition. It will enter into use within the next 30 days, and will be continuously leveraged as a means of adopting additional, novel technologies, “including new, emerging AI models, and modeling and simulation.”
The terms of NATO’s contract with Palantir are unclear.
NATO’s statement makes no mention of issues of human oversight, governance procedures, accountability protocols, or, more generally, methods of guaranteeing transparency, explainability and reliability.
A 2022 West Point analysis of AI technologies, on the other hand, highlighted the many security vulnerabilities associated with the tech, advocating for a thoughtful, careful approach to integration, an approach that seems absent from this latest round of hype.
The landscape: In May of last year, the U.S. Department of Defense awarded Palantir a $480 million contract for a prototype Maven Smart System. In September of last year, the DevCom Army Research Lab awarded Palantir an additional $100 million to expand the Maven system across all the branches of the U.S. military.
Palantir began work on Maven in 2017. It was first deployed in late 2023, shortly following the onset of the Israel-Hamas war.
Dr. Elke Schwarz, a professor of political theory at the Queen Mary University of London, told me in March that it is unclear “why military leaders, who rely on the highest degree of accuracy for their decision making, would come to rely on a technology which is, at this stage of the state of AI, likely to be quite flawed and unreliable.”
Shares of Palantir surged on the news, spiking as much as 5%.

Good Hearing And Vision Can Boost Brain Function In Older People

Good Hearing And Vision Can Boost Brain Function In Older People

By Eurasia Review

As we age, our cognitive abilities deteriorate – it becomes increasingly difficult to remember, orient ourselves in time and space, and solve problems. However, good hearing and vision positively impact cognitive abilities in older adults. This is shown in Andreea Badache’s doctoral thesis in disability science at Örebro University.

“By ensuring good hearing and vision in older adults, we can enhance their independence,” says Andreea Badache.

Nearly 40% of older people in Sweden aged 65 and over experience hearing difficulties, and about 10% suffer from visual impairment. In her thesis, Andreea Badache examines the connection between older adults’ cognitive health – the ability to take in, process, and store information – and their hearing and vision.

“Both our cognitive abilities and our hearing and vision change over time, and the connection between them becomes clearer as we age,” explains Andreea Badache.

This suggests that various interventions, such as hearing aids and eye surgery, can slow cognitive decline, a natural aspect of ageing.

“These findings could significantly impact public health and offer valuable insights for policymakers and healthcare professionals,” says Andreea Badache.

Positive advancements among older adults in Sweden and Denmark

In Sweden and Denmark, older people’s ability to cope with everyday tasks, such as eating, dressing, and cleaning, has improved. These developments can be directly linked to their cognitive abilities, level of education, and reading and hearing skills.

“For instance, among those with higher education, the prevalence of hearing and visual impairments is lower,” she says.

Furthermore, visual impairment is more prevalent in women than in men. In contrast, the findings indicate that hearing difficulties impact men to a greater degree.

What is considered successful ageing?

Andreea Badache also investigated how individuals aged 75 and over define successful ageing. The factors they deemed important were related to health and psychosocial aspects. The study further highlighted a preference for a peaceful and pain-free death.

“As people age, their definitions of successful ageing change. For instance, those aged 75 and older face different challenges compared to 65-year-olds,” explains Badache.

Andreea Badache analysed data from the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Between 2004 and 2017, the SHARE survey collected information on economic, social, and health factors affecting ageing at both the individual and societal levels. Older individuals – aged 50 and over – from 28 European countries and Israel participated in the study.

Of these, approximately 13,000 are from Sweden, and around 10,000 are from Denmark.

He tells Julia: “If you’re diminishing the crimes of Hitler and you’re attacking our wartime leader, Churchill, you are on the wrong side.”
