Mint: Why Google Chief Scientist Jeff Dean Is Leaving To Launch AI Startup With Indian-Origin Tech Veteran

Aug 6, 2026

After 27 years at Google, chief scientist Jeff Dean is leaving the tech giant, but he is not stepping away from AI. Dean is joining longtime collaborator and Indian-origin Google veteran Sanjay Ghemawat, along with AI researchers Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, to launch a new company called Discovery Loop. Discovery Loop has a very different ambition: using AI to propose, conduct and evaluate thousands of scientific experiments simultaneously. The public benefit corporation aims to take AI beyond chatbots and code generation and into laboratories, potentially accelerating discoveries across science and engineering.
