A Johns Hopkins economist says Saudi Arabia should raise the white flag to the Houthis now, before the kingdom itself is on the table Steve Hanke has watched Riyadh fight this enemy before, with full American backing and every advantage short of ground troops, and lose. The Houthis are stronger now than they were at the 2022 peace, their friends are more numerous, and the crown prince has been turned down by Washington twice, waved off by Cairo and left waiting on Beijing. Saudi Arabia, an oil state, is borrowing from the World Bank. So his advice is blunt: surrender early, accept terms, and expect the bill to include the three provinces the kingdom took from Yemen in 1934. Wait, and the serious conversation moves from Saudi losses to Saudi survival. Meanwhile Europe is crossing from deficit to shortage, the point where a station has nothing in the tank, and the markets, in his words, are sleepwalking through all of it.
