What if the biggest danger from artificial intelligence isn’t AI turning against humanity — but humans trusting it, misusing it, or failing to control it? A false AI-assisted intelligence report nearly led U.S. forces to intercept a Chinese ship during the war with Iran.
According to the account discussed by Michael Smerconish, armed service members were preparing to board the vessel and military aircraft were already in the air before officials determined the report was false. And that’s only part of the concern. Anthropic says that over an eight-month period it detected and disrupted actors using Claude in connection with cyber operations, surveillance, fraud, biological misuse and conventional weapons development.
The company says these were exceptional cases rather than typical use, but its report provides real-world examples of AI being used by people for potentially dangerous purposes. Michael is joined by NYU Stern professor Scott Galloway @TheProfGPod who argues that the focus shouldn’t simply be on whether AI becomes uncontrollable. His concern is the people and companies behind these systems — and whether there are enough consequences when things go wrong. “We shouldn’t be scared of AI. We should be scared of reckless people with intent who use AI,” Galloway tells Michael.
Galloway makes the case for regulation, corporate accountability and international cooperation, including cooperation between the United States and China, as increasingly capable AI systems move into cybersecurity, surveillance and weapons-related applications.
