The Rundown: Robot-training data is now a business of its own. Mecka AI is reportedly nearing a funding round at a ~$500M valuation, as investors pile into startups collecting the real-world human data robots need to learn everyday tasks, TechCrunch reports.
The details:
Mecka pays people to record themselves doing tasks like making coffee or fixing cars using smartphones and body sensors, then turns it into training data.The company recently raised $60M and said at the time that signed contracts put it on track for a $100M annual revenue run rate by the end of 2026.Mecka doesn’t build robots; it wants to be the data and deployment layer between hardware, AI models, and the companies putting machines to work. Rival robot-data startup XDOF is reportedly raising at a $1.2B valuation, while Scale AI and Micro1 are also moving into physical-world training data.
Why it matters: Humanoid developers are running into the same bottleneck: robots need huge amounts of real-world data before they can reliably handle everyday tasks. Mecka and XDOF’s fast-growing valuations show just how quickly that demand is turning robot-training data into a major business of its own.
