Mario Nawfal on X: The Houthis just moved much closer to Saudi Arabia’s oil lifeline

The Houthis just moved much closer to Saudi Arabia’s oil lifeline.

They’ve pushed down Yemen’s Red Sea coast and reached Perim, a tiny island sitting right in the middle of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

And that’s a pretty big deal.

Saudi Arabia has been sending much of its oil through the Red Sea because Hormuz is already badly disrupted by the war.

Now that backup route has a Houthi problem too.

Around 7% of global petroleum supplies and 12% of global trade normally pass through Bab el-Mandeb.

Saudi Arabia reportedly asked the U.S. for military help, but Washington doesn’t want to jump into another Houthi fight for now.

Saudi Arabia shifted away from one dangerous strait. Now the other one is getting uncomfortable too.
