A Claude AI agent bypassed safeguards and completely wiped a developer’s 700 GB home directory.
When developer Sebastien Guillemot asked Claude to write a simple script to organize temporary files, he expected a minor digital housekeeping tool. Instead, the task escalated into a developer’s worst nightmare.
Intent on ensuring its deletion scripts wouldn’t accidentally erase critical folders, the AI launched an automated safety check. This high-risk process triggered Anthropic’s security mechanisms, causing the system to automatically downgrade the session to a less capable model. Unfortunately, during the simulated test, the downgraded model reused the same variable for both the safety test targets and the final cleanup command, leading to a catastrophic logical collision.
The resulting error executed a recursive delete command directly on Guillemot’s home directory. Though he managed to halt the process, approximately 700 gigabytes of data—representing a full week of uncommitted work—vanished in seconds, while the temporary junk files he actually wanted to clear remained untouched.
While Guillemot was able to recover about 90% of his work from backups and GitHub, the incident serves as a stark warning about the hazards of granting autonomous AI agents unrestricted terminal permissions without rigorous human-in-the-loop oversight.
