1930s: Eight U.S. banks financed German rearmament. Henry Ford received an award from Hitler for designing Germany’s new tank assembly lines. Despite his bellicose rhetoric, Hitler was viewed favorably as a useful anti-communist, just as Zelensky today serves as the anti-Putin.
In 1933, Wm Dodd became US ambassador in Berlin and began reporting on what he viewed as “Nazi’s ill treatment of Jews.” His reports were ignored. When he went to Washington and met with FDR, he was told, Germany’s treatment of Jews was “an internal matter.” When Dodd persisted, he was fired in 1937. [Read that again: “He was fired.”]
Today, Francesca Albanese, Italian legal scholar and human rights advocate, has repeatedly appealed to the international community to help stop the slaughter in #Gaza, urging international intervention to protect Palestinians from Israel’s brutal, unlawful occupation.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Russian writer and dissident, wrote: “In keeping silent about evil, in burying it so deep within us that no sign of it appears on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousand-fold in the future…”
Francesca Albanese’s efforts to save the Palestinians mirrors William Dodd’s attempts 100 years ago to alert Washington to the growing danger to Germany’s Jews.
In both cases, however, the U.S. and the collective West, then and now, looked the other way, even prosecuting those who dare sound the alarm.
