In Beijing yesterday, two robots ran faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second world record in the 100-meter sprint, clocking 9.39 seconds. Braking was another matter: The machines slammed into a thick mat after the finish line.

The five-day World Humanoid Robot Games, with 2,000+ robots, combines sports with simulated factories, restaurants and offices, Reuters reports.

The intrigueChina makes the majority of the world’s humanoid robots. The U.S. has stepped up scrutiny.

Reality check: Humanoid robots can run quicker than the fastest humans.
