Today, it is a normal part of how the internet (and politicians) work. The sudden deactivation of federal resources like Climate. gov highlights a growing crisis: our history is being quietly erased by centralized digital servers.
When the Trump administration deactivated the federal government’s official climate portal, Climate. gov, and removed key National Climate Assessments, it exposed a profound systemic flaw in the modern internet.
Today, almost all digital information is stored on centralized servers controlled by a small number of institutions. When political administrations or organizations pull the plug on a domain, the public is left with nothing but a ‘page not found’ error.
As Julian Assange warned, this is more than just data loss—the very act of disappearance is rendered completely invisible, leaving future generations with no way of knowing what was once there.
While websites undergo routine updates, recent executive directives have sparked unprecedented, silent purges of public research. Federal agencies have modified or removed thousands of datasets and webpages containing vital environmental, public health, and scientific findings.
