In Syria, Bashar al-Assad’s cousin Atef Najib has been sentenced to death. It is known that in 2011 in Daraa he was involved in the kidnapping and torture of 15 children who had written anti-regime slogans. According to Syrian investigations, Najib directed security operations in Daraa, and his actions are classified as crimes against humanity. Unlike Assad himself, who fled to Russia and was convicted in absentia, Najib heard the verdict in person while standing in the courtroom in a prison uniform. He became the first high-ranking official of the former regime to appear before an in-person tribunal of Syria’s transitional authorities.
