Western consensus over the future of Western Balkan countries is unravelling, as the US and the EU openly pursue conflicting policies in the region. Washington is cutting deals, while Brussels is insisting on rules.
As the US and Europe pursue increasingly different strategies in the Western Balkans, competition for influence is reshaping the region’s political and economic landscape. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, disagreements over the role of the international High Representative highlight a growing transatlantic divide, while concerns persist over separatist ambitions among Bosnian Serb leaders. At the same time, Washington is promoting new energy projects and investments, drawing scrutiny over transparency and governance. With EU membership prospects stalling, some fear the US-EU rivalry could deepen instability in a region still recovering from the Yugoslav wars.
