Abandoned potential homes in Ireland; Census said 166,000+. Urban abandonments and dereliction maintained a dialogue of potential homes abandoned and it is now people like Jude Sherry, Frank O’Connor, Anois who maintain the narrative. Vacant property tax has been introduced but it is a cosmetic failure. What can Ireland learn from Japan? There is no need, other than the profit motive, to hoard properties while our homeless crisis is rising and while immigrants are arriving in Ireland. McVerry Trust started the initiative rolling back in 2018 by engaging with the Government Repair and Lease; now there are better incentives for landlords to get the resources to invest in properties and re-introduces homes to the market space.
