Ireland, new on the agenda for migrants who arrive in the UK on boats, some days as many as 500, and most often, if the truth be told they are mainly men and are most likely “economic migrants”. Ireland must wake up. We too have a homeless crisis similar to the UK. Peter McVerry Trust has a long history dealing with the homeless yet, we read in the papers that during COVID they faced serious economic difficulties. Our homeless provision is inadequate yet we have been able to provide hotels, IPAS centres, pay Irish people who own these properties, millions, yet for the man outside the Tesco shop, in soaked clothes begging for lodging that turfs him back out on the streets at 9 to 5.
