El PAIS – neuroscience: Nazareth Castellanos, neuroscientist: ‘We need to teach anxiety prevention techniques from school onwards’. Comment: Anxiety is essential, we know the reasons why. Long ago, so ill with anxiety that had morphed to depression I asked my psychiatrist why could he be anxious, smoke, manage his workload, his witness appearances in court while I could barely move from one room to another; he explained. Anxiety spurns activity but for some people the anxiety becomes to much and once the penetrate the barrier of danger, their lives can mean medication, treatment and no path of return. I remain plagued by Generalised Anxiety Order over 30 years now. Agoraphobia is a battle each day. I take the necessary medications. My psychiatrist became my mentor as did the psychologists I attended. But it is truly hard to achieve this ““Every man can be, if he sets his mind to it, a sculptor of his own brain.” Where do we begin? This is an empowering piece of writing especially for parents rearing children. Anxiety can start very young, in my case it was in night terrors about aged 3 which I recall to this day, they involved a VW car killing family and friends, looking back, they were a constant. “[The priest and writer] Pablo D’Ors says something very beautiful: “How can you know yourself if you don’t love yourself?”
