Russia’s war has transformed Europe’s security landscape. As Germany rearms, many young people reject military service. Can Finland’s example change minds?

Germany wants to make the Bundeswehr the strongest conventional military force in Europe — in light of the growing threat from Russia.
Military equipment worth €4 billion has already been ordered, but the number of soliders to use that equipment has remained stagnant.
As a result, the possibility of reinstating the draft — as was the case during the Cold War — is once again being discussed.
Many young Germans however want nothing to do with this and reject the idea of conscription — in stark contrast to young people in other European countries, like Finland.
There the population has traditionally had a close connection to its armed forces. Could Germany learn from Finland’s example? Is the skeptical view that Germans hold of their military beginning to shift?
