IAEA chief says Iran’s enriched uranium likely still at Isfahan, urges concessions from Iran —— IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said on 29 April that most of Iran’s highly enriched uranium is likely still stored at the Isfahan nuclear complex, despite previous airstrikes. He noted the agency has not been able to inspect the site since June 2025 to verify whether its seals remain intact. Grossi also pointed to satellite imagery showing trucks carrying containers believed to hold 60% enriched uranium entering underground tunnels at the facility just before the 12-day war last year. On negotiations, Grossi said the 2015 nuclear deal can no longer serve as a basis for a new agreement, arguing Iran’s program has advanced too far. He confirmed discussions with Russia and other countries over potentially shipping Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile out of the country or diluting it, stressing that any deal would require significant “political will” from Tehran (in other words, unreasonable concessions only from the Iranian side), with both sides still far apart on initial steps. Grossi has been previously slammed by Iranian officials and state-aligned media for his politicized and biased stance, with accusations that he acted in alignment with Israeli interests, shared sensitive information and provided diplomatic cover for strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. Under Article IV of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Iran possesses an inalienable right to develop and utilize nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, which includes the domestic process of uranium enrichment.
