Axios: Oil prices hit wartime high

Oil prices hit wartime high

A line chart that tracks the average U.S. price of regular gasoline per gallon from Jan. 1, 2020, to April 30, 2026. Prices range from a low of $1.7682 to a high of $5.0165. The series starts at $2.5854, reaches $3.3736 in March 2023 and ends at $4.30.Data: AAA. Chart: Emily Peck/Axios

Oil prices reached their highest levels since the Iran war began, with Brent crude topping $126 per barrel this morning before pulling back, Axios’ Ben Geman reports.

The jump will keep pushing U.S. gasoline prices higher amid the possibility of a long stalemate that keeps the Strait of Hormuz throttled.

The nationwide average price for a gallon of regular gas is $4.30 as of this morning.

That’s up 7¢ from yesterday, and up nearly 30¢ in a week and over a dollar more than a year ago, per AAA.Interactive map.
