Verse about parents…what do you think? Philip Larkin wrote this verse

This Be The Verse

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another’s throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don’t have any kids yourself.

Analysis (ai): This poem explores the notion of familial legacy and intergenerational trauma. It presents a grim view of parenthood, suggesting that parents inevitably pass on their own flaws and shortcomings to their children. The speaker emphasizes the cyclical nature of suffering, claiming that parents were also victimized by their own parents. The imagery of “old-style hats and coats” and “fools” evokes a sense of absurdity and futility, reinforcing the idea that misery is an intrinsic part of human existence. The poem’s blunt and cynical tone contrasts with the traditional sentimentality often associated with family and parenthood. This contrast underscores the author’s deep-seated pessimism and rejection of societal norms. Compared to Larkin’s other works, this poem shares his characteristic bleakness and preoccupation with the darker aspects of human nature. It aligns with the post-World War II era’s disillusionment and skepticism, reflecting the widespread sense of loss and disillusionment following the war. (hide)
