Sleep …

WE USED TO SLEEP TWICE A NIGHT – UNTIL THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION RUINED IT For thousands of years, humans had two sleeps: one at sundown, a wakeful “watch” around midnight, then another stretch till dawn. That midnight wake-up? Totally normal. People prayed, read, made beer, philosophized, had sex – or just talked. It was literally built into our biology. Then the Industrial Revolution showed up with gas lamps, factory bells, and productivity sermons. Suddenly, biphasic sleep was “weird,” and being awake at midnight meant you were slacking. By the 20th century, the “8-hour block” became gospel – even though it’s a historical blip. Now we panic if we wake up at 2AM, instead of realizing: it’s how we’re wired to sleep. Congrats. You traded midnight chats and dream recall for alarm clocks and burnout. Source: History Season
