Researchers have discovered that large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT may process information in ways strikingly similar to the brains of people with Wernicke’s aphasia—a disorder where individuals speak fluently but often incoherently.
Using energy landscape analysis, a method adapted from physics, the team compared brain activity from aphasia patients to internal signal patterns in several AI models. They found that both systems exhibit similar internal dynamics, suggesting a rigid processing pattern that can lead to fluent but unreliable outputs.This insight could improve how clinicians diagnose and monitor aphasia by focusing on internal brain activity rather than just external symptoms.It also offers a fresh perspective for AI engineers seeking to make LLMs more reliable and context-aware.
While the comparison is metaphorical, the overlap reveals potential shared limitations in how both systems manage and access stored information.
