The loss of virgin steel production in Britain is strategically, an unmitigated disaster. This is steel made from scratch, using iron ore in blast furnaces. This primary steel is the only steel suitable for the production of ships, heavy armor and a defence industry. Electric arc furnaces, which use recycled steel, can’t produce that sort of steel. The fact it’s a Chinese company that is shutting it down highlights the stupidity and complacency that has led to the Chinese being the ones to pull the plug. The killing off of virgin steel production in the U.K., formerly the workshop of the world, is an enormous strategic coup for China & an historic failure of British industrial strategy. One thing I will say, not another penny should be given to this Chinese operation. I would tell them to shove their electric arc furnaces up their Yangtze.
