1. Exports Drop Ireland’s pharma exports worth €billions in 2023 take a BIG hit. As U.S. buyers face higher prices, demand weakens.
2. GDP Growth Slows Pharma drives a big share of Ireland’s economy. Lower output dents national growth, confidence and reduces momentum.
3. Corporate Tax Falls In 2023, €24.5bn came from corporate tax, much of it from U.S. pharma giants. Less profit = smaller tax haul.
4. Markets React Bond spreads widen. Investors grow cautious. Ireland’s borrowing could get pricier as fiscal space tightens. Gov may cut spending. Business loans get pricier.
5. FDI Recalibrates U.S. multinationals may delay or scale down Irish investments. Uncertainty clouds Ireland’s “gateway to Europe” appeal.
6. Jobs at Risk Pharma employs ~40,000 directly in Ireland & a lot more indirectly. Slowdowns mean hiring freezes, reduced hours etc and local economies feel it first.
7. Households Tighten Less job certainty, weaker public finances. People spend less, save more. Consumer sentiment takes a hit.
Bottom Line: A U.S. tariff won’t just hit exports, it would ripple through Ireland’s economy, markets, and households. Smart policy response now essential.
