Robots on the Battlefield

What Happened:

For much of the war in Ukraine, drones have dominated the battlefield, carrying out reconnaissance, targeting enemy positions, and even conducting attacks. But now, another major shift is underway: unmanned ground vehicles are beginning to play a larger role as well.

At the same time, AI-driven robotics are rapidly advancing. According to Jensen Huang, the CEO of NVIDIA, recent breakthroughs in AI mean that robots can now be trained far more effectively and efficiently than ever before. This could lead to a massive surge in robotic systems impacting everyday life – including on the battlefield.

One company, Figure AI, has already announced plans to deploy 100,000 humanoid robots within four years, a development that will almost certainly have military applications.

Why It Matters:

  • While still in its early stages, unmanned ground vehicles and humanoid robots could start playing a significant role on the battlefield in the late 2020s and early 2030s.
  • AI and drones have already made combat deadlier and faster-paced; robots could take this further by replacing humans in the most dangerous roles, particularly in frontline infantry positions.
  • Militaries with advanced AI and robotics will gain a major edge, while those without will struggle to keep up.
  • This shift could be especially crucial for countries like Ukraine or parts of Europe which face demographic challenges and struggle with military recruiting – and may need AI-driven systems to maintain their defense capabilities.
