How Stressful Events Alter Memories
Stress can disrupt memory precision, leading to generalized aversive memories that trigger fear in unrelated, safe situations—a hallmark of PTSD. Researchers found that stress increases the release of endocannabinoids, which enlarges memory engrams in the brain by disrupting interneurons responsible for maintaining engram specificity. These larger engrams cause generalized fearful memories, impairing the ability to distinguish between threatening and safe environments. By blocking endocannabinoid receptors on specific interneurons, researchers were able to restore memory specificity and limit the spread of fearful responses. This breakthrough sheds light on the biological mechanisms of stress-induced memory generalization and offers a promising pathway for PTSD treatment. Future research will explore links between memory engrams, stress, and age to further refine therapeutic approaches.
