How Decision-Making Improves with Age

Adolescents exhibit high decision noise, often choosing suboptimal options, but this tendency decreases with age and correlates with improvements in goal-directed behaviors and adaptability. A study analyzing participants aged 12 to 42 found that decision noise levels were consistent across tasks and mediated age-related increases in sophisticated choice-making. This suggests that the reduction of noise with age contributes to enhanced decision strategies like planning and flexibility. Adolescents’ reliance on less efficient decision strategies may result from limited cognitive resources, as their brain areas related to cognitive control are still developing. Emotional, motivational, and social influences further impact their decision-making processes. These findings provide insight into the computational mechanisms behind decision-making and open pathways for understanding neurodevelopmental disorders and real-world applications.
