Schizophrenia. Andrew Solomon and Robert Kolker discuss Kolker’s new book, Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family. Hidden Valley Road tells the story of the Galvin family (12 children), a large Colorado family of boys born during the baby boom a majority of whom, by the mid-1970s, were diagnosed with schizophrenia. Murder suicide, clerical abuse, estrangement, the father became ill. How can they still be a family? Opens the door to inheritability. …”Hidden Valley Road documents the history of the science of schizophrenia, from the era of institutionalization, lobotomy, and the schizophrenogenic mother to the search for genetic markers for the disease. This event was sponsored by the Family Action Network. Recorded March 10, 2021.”

You are prescribed lithium which maintains the mood but then you get older and lithium is not good for your kidneys but you know the hell that another severe depression will be and you fear beyond fear and dread beyond dread what lies ahead. For people with depression Andrew Solomon is a name you should carry close to your heart and seek guidance from when you get into that black hole. TED explains but I highly recommend the interview with Charlie Rose. If you want to explore further about the brain, check out Charlie Rose, the Brain Series
