TBI 1994: Lifelong learning, the computer, internet, social media and yes I reached Dr Adam Zeman, Exeter University. Below is a podcast that describes the impact of a TBI in my case. Imagine I went through ECT so maybe if I had known about Aphantasia, there may have been another option (this was 1998 afterall). I can’t get the podcast “Think of a Horse – The Doc Project” but if you are interested it really is worth listening too. The power of virtual community has real stake in the world too. I have one difference not mentioned in this podcast and that is I can return to the images pre accident/especially childhood ie a fall from a horse, which makes this an appropriate title for me especially.

Think of a Horse

Close your eyes and imagine a horse. What do you see? Statistically, you can probably picture the horse in your mind. The colour, the flowing tail. Tom Ebeyer can’t do that. Tom doesn’t have a mind’s eye, and for the first 20 years of his life he didn’t even know what a mind’s eye was. But now, Tom is finding other people like him, and they are finding belonging in their difference. Plus, they finally have a name for it: aphantasia

favourite resources on aphantasia.

  1. Think of a Horse – A podcast I did for the CBC. This one’s a massive “light bulb” moment for newly-discovered Aphants because they relate to so much of what I went through. They feel seen, heard and validated.
  2. Picture This? Some Just Can’t – The first time I was “revealed” to the world as an aphant… in the New York Times
