Monthly Archives: February 2024

2023 listen to common sense lecture by 80 year old Bernie Sanders who addresses the Oxford Union. There are facts about life and economic freedom that we must engage with. 60% of American citizens are living paycheck to paycheck, 500,000 people go bankrupt each year because they are not able, for financial reasons, to pay their health bills; addiction is rife, 100,000 people died from overdose in the year 2022. The reality is that people are living in an epidemic of “Diseases of Despair” and sheer loneliness, and people are dying earlier than they should. People talk about Equality but do you know that those on the top of the pyramid never had it so good? They are wealthier than at any other time in history. I highly recommend this address.

Sunday papers; Assisted dying which is being debated in Ireland and the UK and I see a name of a virtual companion of mine, for years now both on X (Twitter) and blog. Wendy Mitchell left this world aged just 68, having been diagnosed with early onset dementia. She was a remarkable person, writing books about dementia, giving lecturers to enlighten people, advocating the right to choose when to die. Goodbye Wendy. I will miss your early morning walks and the photos of country life especially the birds in Yorkshire. The train journeys and so much more. Peace to your daughters. You have made so many people aware of a dementia but your spirit will be what will be remembered and of course your altruism.

Thank you Wendy: a loyal follower for years now. My final hug in a mug…. February 22, 2024A day in the lifewendy7713 Dear everyone who has followed my story and anyone else who cares to read this… If you’re reading this, … Continue reading

The Rugby Match today: Wales versus Ireland. The gatherings have already started in Dublin 4. It is a full-house at Lansdowne Road; as for me, the oldie, I prefer to call it Lansdowne but I want to people to remember that Dublin 4 has an underbelly of people who are on the margins so please don’t dismiss them or forget them. Keith sits outside Donnybrook Fair; he lives on the green verge of the canal in a tent; another Edward is living in a hostel. Both were beaten up recently; it is a cruel world on the margins. Fred’s favorite stroll is down Wellington Road. He was shocked to see a young man set up his sleeping arrangements for the night, it was lying on the grass verge, in a sleeping bag, in the cold of yesterday. These are our fellow citizens. They may not pay PAYE/PRSI but as Vincent Browne always reminded us, they are citizens, they pay tax on the products they buy for their survival while many have the luxuries of travel and duty free.

This is a poem from many years ago, submitted to a citizen journalism site. It is worth sharing this winter day. Sadly there is no name and my only hope is, if he or she was homeless then, that their … Continue reading

Fascinating Interview. Depression and Anxiety explained and how to engage with choosing who to attend eg the Psycholigist (Past) or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Ireland grossly ignores the mental illness that increasingly applies to a younger generation. Try get a private appointment in our elite hospitals. Waiting lists and shortage of psychiatrists especially for elderly clients is a shocking indictment on Government, Psychiatry, and then there is the provision of primary healthcare in the community. Now 2 decades on from “institutions for the mentally insane” to the new model of community support. This is a neglect reality and now St John of God’s scandal just adds more fuel to the flame.
